Issue to consider before going for Breast reduction
The size of a woman's breasts is somewhat established by the inherited genetic factors that also affect the height and frame. It is also influenced by her weight and by hormones.
Some women develop large breasts from their adolescent years. Others develop them later in life or during menopause or following the use of some medicines.
- Have an overview of your general health, and know about any past illnesses or conditions that increase the risks and complications during surgery. Such illnesses include diabetes, blood circulation problems, heart and lung problems.
- Before opting for breast reduction, be rational about the result you hope to achieve. A moderate reduction is a better option than a drastic reduction in size as this can affect the final shape and appearance of the breasts.
- Many a times the benefits of breast reduction far outweigh the complications. Therefore, it is very important to carefully understand the risks before opting for it.
- If you are a young woman, it is advisable to wait until your breasts have stopped growing and have fully matured before performing the operation.
- Because breast size changes with body weight, surgery is recommended only after you lose some weight and get stable on the weight front. Reduced breasts won't grow again after surgery, but they may look awkward if you gain or lose weight later.
- Get a mammography done three months before the surgery to help ensure that you are not suffering from any breast disease like breast cancer. When cancer is found after a reduction surgery, there is no way to know exactly where in the breast the cancer is located. It can result in a much bigger reduction than originally planned, even a mastectomy.
- If you have family history of breast cancer, ask the plastic surgeon to consider a breast MRI before surgery. The more you know about what is inside the breast, the safer you will be, although cancer may develop at a later stage also. Breast reduction has been shown to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.
- Check out on your surgeon especially his experience in performing this operation, for example:
1. how often the surgeon has performed this type of operation
2. what are the most occurring complications on his patients
- Information on long term effects, complications.
Always remember to go for follow-ups post surgery to heal up quickly and without complications.
